Governing a membership organisation today
What happens when you put a group of charity Chief Executives in the room together? In our experience, within 15 minutes the conversation turns to their board - and let’s face it they quickly begin to share frustrations and concerns.
And if that group happens to be a group of charity Chief Executives of membership organisations, this conversation has a distinct flavour and focuses on the role that members play in AGMs, or voting for Trustees.
Modernising membership
Given that many major UK membership organisations are Victorian in origin, this is not surprising. These governance arrangements are part of that history, reflecting the fact that membership organisations were led and managed by volunteers for many years.
So how can membership organisations deal with these specific challenges?
You can find out more in this recent piece for Civil Society’s governance and leadership magazine written by Lucent’s founder and consultant Katherine Rake.
If these challenges sound familiar pop an email to Katy Panter, Lucent’s Relationship Executive, and she can set up a consultation with the relevant Lucent consultant.
